Responsible Executive Officer: Vice President for Student Services

Purpose

This policy defines responsibilities, legal propriety, appropriate usage and maintenance, and prohibited actions in association with student use of iPads at WSCC.

Policy

I. Introduction

The policies, procedures, and information within this document apply to iPads used at WSCC including any iPads issued to students and to other non‐institutional persons using WSCC iPads. Instructors may have additional requirements for iPad use in the classrooms which may not be spelled out in this document.

The iPad is college property, and students will follow this policy as well as the WSCC acceptable use policy for technology.

II. Definitions

  1. Student - a person using an iPad at WSCC who is not an employee at WSCC

III. Receiving and Returning

Students must sign and return the iPad Policy, Procedures and Information contract before receiving the iPad, and the contract must remain in the possession of the instructor who issued the iPad to the student. The iPads will be returned to instructors during the final week of classes at the end of the semester. Students who withdraw, drop, or otherwise stop attending the course must immediately return the iPad to the instructor who issued the iPad to the students.

IV. Failure to Return

If a student fails to return the iPad, a hold will be placed on grades, and the student will be subject to appropriate legal action. The student will also pay the replacement cost of the iPad, and/or any accessories to include power cord and case damaged or lost while in the student’s possession.

V. General Usage and Maintenance

Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad issued to them by the college. Students should maintain and use the device responsibly. Specifically,

Students should immediately inform the instructor if the iPad is lost, stolen, broken, cracked, or fails to work properly.

  • Cords and cable must be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage.
  • The iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, labels or other markings not placed on the device by WSCC.
  • The iPad must be secure at all times.
  • The iPad must have the passcode activated.
  • Students may have their iPad inspected at any time by instructors or other college personnel.
  • Students are responsible for damages to the device.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to not expose the iPad to heat greater than room temperature or leave the iPad in a closed car and exposed to direct sun.

VI. Carrying, Protection, and Storage

The protective cases provided have sufficient padding to protect the iPad from normal treatment and provide suitable means for carrying the device. The iPads should remain in their protective cases. The iPad must be returned with only normal wear to the iPad and its cover to avoid paying damage or replacement fee. Under no circumstance should iPads be left unattended by the student or in unsupervised areas. If an iPad is found, it should be immediately taken to the college’s campus police.

VII. Screen Care

The iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure and heat. The iPads should not be cleaned with cleaners of any type. A microfiber cloth should be used to clean the screen periodically.

VIII. Screensavers/Backgrounds

Inappropriate media, as determined by faculty or staff, may not be used as a screensaver or background photo. The presence of guns, weapons, sexually explicit or pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, gang related symbols, and/or pictures are not allowed as screensavers and/or as background photos.

IX. Software

The software/applications originally installed by WSCC must remain on the iPad in usable condition and be easily accessible at all times. Students may be asked periodically to update the iPad software.

X. Student Activities Strictly Prohibited

Students should not engage in certain activities on the iPad. Specifically, students should not

  • Install or transmit copyrighted materials.
  • Carry out any action that violates existing TBR policy, WSCC college policy, or public law.
  • Send, access, upload, download, or distribute offensive, profane, threatening, or sexually explicit or pornographic materials.

  • Transmit or access materials that are obscene, offensive, threatening, or otherwise intended to harass or demean recipients.

XI. Potential Fines

Students may be held responsible for loss or damage to the iPad or its cover. Those iPads that have been lost or damaged may be repaired or replaced at the students’ expense at the discretion of the institution up to but not exceeding the replacement cost of the device or cover.

XII. Legal Propriety

Students will comply with trademark, copyright, and all license agreements. Plagiarism is a violation of the WSCC Student Code of Conduct. This includes all forms of media on the internet, such as graphics, movies, music and text.
