06:01:01 Guidelines for Faculty

Purpose

To outline the instructional, curricular and administrative responsibilities of faculty.


Policy

I. Objectives

Responsibility for the implementation of the instructional program rests with the teaching faculty. Excellence in teaching - teaching that will convey the excitement of learning - stands foremost among the challenges and responsibilities of the college. Within this framework faculty have certain routine objectives some of which are listed as follows:

  1. Routine Instructional Objectives
    1. Teach an average of 15 equated hours per semester.
    2. Devote a minimum of 37.5 hours per week to the institution, maintain appropriate office hours as determined by college officials, and bring to the attention of the appropriate dean any commitments which might affect employment in compliance with the TBR Policy 05:01:05:00 on Outside Employment.
    3. Generate a minimum of 300 student credit hours per semester; except where fewer hours are dictated by accreditation standards or approved by the Vice-President of Academic Affairs for duties, iniatives, and/or projects outside of those listed in this policy;
    4. Assist dean in the development of a semester departmental schedule of classes;
    5. Recommend adoption of course materials in collaboration with other professional staff members in the department;
    6. Assist with the implementation of departmental exams and standardized tests when such use is deemed feasible and beneficial;
    7. Participate in faculty development goals to improve professional effectiveness;
    8. Participate in the evaluation of instruction via peer, student and self-evaluations;
    9. Complete all syllabi for courses taught each semester in syllabus management system;
    10. Carry out supervision of laboratory activity, private and other instruction in a conscientious and professional manner;
    11. Meet classes promptly as scheduled with any deviation being filed promptly and accurately through the appropriate channels;
    12. Assume responsibility for giving examinations and other types of evaluations necessary to determine student level of performance and understanding;
    13. Cooperate with the Library personnel in the selection, development, and distribution of resource material used by the faculty member’s department;
    14. Respond in a timely fashion to reasonable deadlines; and
    15. Cooperate with other areas of the college in order to provide an effective educational program.
  2. Routine Curriculum Objectives
    1. Develop and recommend to dean new courses and programs of study when the need arises;
    2. Recommend modification or discontinuance of courses or programs of study if appropriate;
    3. Advise students regarding career and academic exploration: support divisional professional advisor(s) as needed.
  3. Routine Administrative Support
    1. Assist in the preparation of budget requests for each fiscal year;
    2. Recommend purchase of supplies and equipment and other uses of appropriate budgetary funds for the instructional program;
    3. Requests professional travel in support of faculty development;
    4. Assume responsibility for equipment assigned to the faculty member;
    5. Recommend to dean needs for custodial care and maintenance of physical facilities in support of instructional work or study;
    6. Assist in the preparation of proposals for special, federal, state and private projects and grants;
    7. Attend divisional faculty meetings and participate in the discussion of academic issues during these meetings;
    8. Carry out the professional requests of dean in support of reports, proposals, or other divisional needs deemed necessary by the dean;
    9. Attend officially called assemblies or faculty meetings;
    10. Participate in graduation exercises, orientations, and student engagement activities as directed;
    11. Participate and expedite the process of faculty evaluation following established procedures; and;
    12. Actively serve on committees as appointed or elected.

Other objectives of a problem solving, innovative, professional growth, or community service nature are generally identified and agreed upon by a faculty member and appropriate dean during goal setting discussions in support of institution or divisional goals (See 06:02:00: Academic Freedom & Responsibility).
