11:21:00 Faculty Promotion Review Committee

Revision Responsibility: Executive Council
Responsible Executive Officer: Vice President for Academic Affairs

Purpose

Promotion in rank is recognition of past achievements of the individual being considered for promotion. In addition, the advancement in rank is a recognition of future potential and a sign of confidence that the individual is capable of even greater accomplishments and assuming greater responsibilities. The policy of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR): The College System of Tennessee and Walters State Community College is to make promotions strictly on consideration of merit tempered by sound institutional considerations. The purpose of this committee is to help ensure that promotions are made objectively, equitably, impartially, and as recognition of merit consistent with the guidelines.

Members of the Faculty Promotion Review Committee (FPRC) meet with the vice president for Academic Affairs during the fall semester to review the faculty promotion plan and promotion review calendar. The FPRC chair will then inform the faculty of the promotion procedure, promotion materials required, and review deadlines for the submission of promotion materials. The FPRC’s primary responsibility will be to review and evaluate all the materials included in each candidate’s electronic promotion folder for quality and originality. The members will then assign points according to the appropriate rubric(s). The committee will then total each candidate’s points, rank the candidates from the highest to the lowest according to point totals, and forward its rankings to the vice president for Academic Affairs. Faculty Promotion Review Committee shall meet as needed each fall and spring semester.

Membership

Each division will select one faculty member to serve on the committee. In addition, two members will be elected by the faculty at large. Members of the committee should not be a candidate for promotion, and department heads/division deans are not eligible to serve. The chair shall be elected by the Faculty Senate to serve a term of three years and does not count as a member from their division. The chair will receive $750 extra compensation each academic year of service as chair.
