A study of fundamental concepts and properties of selected elements and compounds. Topics covered are: tools of chemistry; atoms, molecules and ions; chemical reactions I: chemical equations and reactions in aqueous solutions; chemical reactions II: mass relationships; the gaseous state; thermochemistry; quantum theory and the electronic structure of atoms; periodic relationships among the elements; chemical bonding: basic concepts; chemical bonding II: molecular geometry and molecular orbitals; and intermolecular forces and liquids and solids.
