Public Safety - Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

Emphasis: Emergency Medical Technician

The Public Safety Division provides educational services to individuals desiring to enter the emergency service field. Basic and advanced skills training accompany didactic material preparing individuals for entry level practice as a Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic. Pre-hospital professionals are provided continuing education opportunities for maintenance of their license.

This program is designed for the student who does not intend to transfer to a baccalaureate degree program.

 

Admission Requirements

A prospective student seeking admission to the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program must complete the following procedures according to State of Tennessee, Office of Emergency Medical Services, and Walters State Community College policies.

  • Be admitted to the college.
  • Be currently licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Tennessee or have successfully completed an EMT education program within 120 days of beginning the Advanced EMT education program and have successfully completed a Tennessee EMS Board approved EMT competency written and practical examination.
  • EMT’s who have shown competency in basic knowledge and skills through completion of Board approved written and practical examination and wish to progress to AEMT training without obtaining an EMT license shall submit evidence of good moral character (two letters of reference). Such evidence shall attest to the EMTs good moral character and two recent (within the preceding 12 months) original letters from medical professionals attesting to the applicant’s personal character. Preferably, one letter should be from current employer and the second letter should be a character reference. In the situation of unemployment, two character letters may be submitted. Family references will not be accepted.
  • A copy of the CPR healthcare provider level certificate must be submitted that includes one-person, two person, infant and child CPR.
  • Submit proof of medical malpractice insurance and health insurance as required.
  • Complete a physical exam, along with all required vaccinations and/or titers.
  • Meet other admission requirements as stipulated in the Rules of the Tennessee Department of Health, Bureau of Health Licensure and Regulation, Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Architected Pathway

The default sequence of courses, stated by semester, for this program of study is prescribed by the statewide faculty curriculum committee as the best model for the student to complete the academic award in an efficient and timely manner. To deviate from this sequence the student must request a waiver from the program director or appropriate designee. The student must be made aware by the program director or appropriate designee that deviation from this default pathway may result in a delay for completing the required courses for the academic award within the stated time frame.

The following Recommended Full-Time Schedule is not a substitute for academic advising. You must meet with an academic advisor each semester to be cleared for registration. Requirements are continually under revision, and there is no guarantee they will not be changed or revoked. Contact the academic division or department for current information.

Factors that affect your progression include required Learning Support courses, completion of computer competency and your choices regarding campus location, course delivery method, and the days and times selected to take classes.

Notes:

• Successful completion of EMSA 1501, EMSA 1201, EMSA 1111, EMSA 1502, EMSA 1202, and EMSA 1112 fulfills the 16 semester hours of credit requirement for the Advanced EMT Certificate.
