Engineering Systems Technology - Mechanical Design

The Engineering Systems Technology program is designed to provide students with an effective blending of diverse industrial skill sets through a variety of specializations, preparing program completers with the skills needed for immediate entrance into the industrial workforce. Skills emphasized in the program include, but are not limited to: advanced manufacturing applications, computerized design and industrial equipment programming, operations management, and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems.

The AAS in Engineering Systems Technology was developed in compliance with the Complete College Tennessee Act of 2010. Students who begin this program at Walters State Community College and transfer to another Tennessee public community college are guaranteed their credits will transfer toward completion of the AAS degree in Engineering Systems Technology.

In compliance with the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) accreditation requirements, all students graduating from the AAS in Engineering Systems Technology must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours of management and/or technical coursework at Walters State Community College as a requirement for graduation.

The Engineering Systems Technology degree program contains four specialization areas. Students are required to choose one specialization area from the four provided: Mechanical Design, Architectural Design, Advanced Manufacturing, and Operations Management.

Mechanical Design Specialization:

The mechanical design specialization covers the applications of both 2D and 3D mechanical design, which include part and assembly designs as well as tooling design applications. Students will also cover CNC machine programming, including the conversion of 3D mechanical designs into programs used by computerized machining equipment to machine and turn finished products. The use of 3D printing for the purpose of rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing is also included in the curriculum.

This program and its specialization areas are designed for the student who does not intend to transfer to a baccalaureate degree program.

Requirements are continually under revision, and there is no guarantee they will not be changed or revoked. Contact the academic division or department for current information.

Factors that affect your progression include required Learning Support courses and your choices regarding campus location, course delivery method, and the days and times selected to take classes.
