WSCC Policy 06:17:00 Employment of Adjunct Faculty
|
Purpose
To establish the process for professional staff employees teaching at the institution outside of their primary job duties.
Policy
I. Objectives
- This policy is consistent with TBR Policy 5:01:05:00 Outside Employment and Extra Compensation for Additional Assignments, WSCC Policy 06:08:00 Extra Compensation, and WSCC Policy 06:17:00 Employment of Adjunct Faculty, and outlines the college’s position and procedures regarding professional staff employees teaching as adjunct instructors.
- This policy is intended for professional staff employees who teach a credit course as an adjunct instructor and as “teacher of record,” for which he or she receives supplemental compensation.
- Professional staff employees must complete the adjunct faculty application and approval process within the applicable academic division to qualify for an adjunct teaching assignment.
- Professional staff employees may be allowed to teach up to a maximum of two courses (Walters State or TN eCampus) per semester with prior written approval (see the Professional Staff Teaching Approval Form) for teaching outside of their regularly scheduled work hours; or, in special situations, within their regularly scheduled work hours. Teaching should not interfere with an employee’s assigned duties and responsibilities.
- The compensation rate used for courses taught is the adjunct faculty rate. Professional staff may choose to teach a course gratis in special situations or circumstances.
II. Policy Exclusions
- Professional staff members who teach a course or courses as a part of their primary job, such as a lab coordinator or program advisor, so long as the teaching responsibility is clearly defined in his or her job description.
- Guest lectures or short presentations by staff members.
