03:20:00 Recording and Removal of “I”

Revision Responsibility: Vice President for Student Services
Responsible Executive Officer: Vice President for Student Services

Purpose

Describes process for recording and removing Grade of “I” incomplete course requirements

Policy

I. Process

The grade of “I” indicates that the student is passing the course at the end of the semester but has not completed all course requirements because of extenuating circumstances. Failure to make up work or to turn in required work on time does not provide a basis for an “I” unless reasons presented are acceptable to the instructor. When a student fails to appear for the final examination without known cause, the grade to be reported should be determined as follows:

  1. If the student has done satisfactory work to that point, an “I” may be reported on the assumption that the student was ill or will otherwise present sufficient reason for an official absence.

  2. If the student has attended regularly and has not done satisfactory work to that point, the grade “F” should be reported.

Instructors who expect to be absent the following semester must recognize their responsibility and make arrangements with the student or with the department head for the student to remove the “I”.

Faculty will use the grade change form to assign a grade after the student has completed all required work. This change will be submitted for signatures to the academic dean and to the vice president for Academic Affairs and then should be submitted directly to the Records Office.

It is the responsibility of the student to see the faculty member if the grade is in question. 01/15; 05/16
