06:04:01 Oral and Written English Proficiency

Purpose

To specify requirements for Oral English Proficiency.


Policy

For each individual appointed to a full-time or adjunct teaching position, the dean/designee will acknowledge on the Faculty Transcript Review form that, in his/her perception, the faculty member demonstrates an ability to speak and write English clearly; an ability to understand written and spoken English; and an ability to communicate effectively in an academic environment.

Appropriate dean/designee will review all student evaluation comments related to speech adequacy for each individual recommended for tenure. If problems are noted during the probationary period, the college will use a diagnostic instrument to assess the nature and level of the difficulty. The process includes procedures ensuring compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The college will, within its financial resources, attempt to assist a faculty member having difficulty.
