06:17:00 Employment of Adjunct Faculty

Revision Responsibility: Executive Director of Human Resources
Responsible Executive Officer: Vice President for Business & Finance

Purpose

To outline required qualifications and the process for selection of adjunct faculty.

Policy

All adjunct faculty in the academic teaching areas are required to have the same academic qualifications as full-time faculty, which is a master’s degree with at least 18 semester hours of graduate work in the subject area in which the individual plans to teach. However, in the area of developmental studies and select technology programs, persons with a bachelor’s degree and documented technical experience within the area of teaching may be used. For select courses, unique experiential qualifications in conjunction with demonstrated competence may substitute for advanced academic preparation. Such exceptions must be fully documented and justified by the institution on an individual basis.

The Instructional Department for Educator Advancement and Success (IDEAS) welcomes applications from qualified individuals. The dean of the hiring division reviews and approves the credentials and recommends qualified applicants. The Director of IDEAS and the vice president for Academic Affairs authorizes the approval of those recommended for adjunct status. The approved adjunct faculty members are then considered to be on a standby status. All adjunct instructors are employed on a semester basis.

Information on pay rates per semester credit hour can be provided via Human Resources or through IDEAS. Maximum allowable rates per semester credit hour are listed in TBR Policy 5:01:00:00, Section IV. D.1.
