Public Safety - Paramedic

Emphasis: Paramedic

The Public Safety Division provides educational services to individuals desiring to enter the emergency service field. Basic and advanced skills training accompany didactic material preparing individuals for entry level practice as an Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic. Pre-hospital professionals are provided continuing education opportunities for maintenance of their license.

This program is designed for the student who does not intend to transfer to a baccalaureate degree program.

Admission Requirements

A prospective student seeking admission to the Paramedic program must complete the following procedures according to State of Tennessee, Office of Emergency Medical Services, and Walters State Community College policies. Students who successfully complete requirements for the Paramedic technical certificate are eligible to take the National Registry Paramedic Examination.

The following criteria must be met in order for an applicant to be considered for admission to the Paramedic Training Program:

  • Be admitted to the college
  • Be currently licensed as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Tennessee. Students must submit a copy of a current AEMT card to the Paramedic Program.
  • A copy of the CPR healthcare provider level certificate must be submitted that includes one-person, two-person, infant, and child CPR.
  • Applicant may be required to take a knowledge test if the student has been out of AEMT for more than one calendar year.
  • Submit a separate application to the Paramedic program and be admitted.
  • Submit proof of medical malpractice insurance and health insurance as required.
  • Complete a physical exam, along with all required vaccinations and/or titers.

Program Description


Paramedic training is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction (Didactic and Psychomotor skills) and a blend of clinical/field experience. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry’s written and practical examinations. Upon successful completions of examinations and other licensure requirements, the student will be eligible for the State of Tennessee Paramedic license. The Paramedic renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illnesses and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital.
